Essay - In Response to Question # 3

New communication technologies are an integral part of society and distribution via the world wide web is the already here.
Digital media put the tools of production into the hands of the everyday computer user making it incredibly easy to produce content.
The four basic tools of production in film making are image, sound, time and space. Image can be represented by the following skills; camera framing, lighting, camera movement and colour. These creative skills used to be something that people worked to develop.
Now it seems as though amateur film makers can produce content of a fair standard within a relatively short period of time. With this being the reality, and YouTube providing the one of the paths to success for amateur film makers, the question remains, where does this leave highly skilled practitioners? The worldwide web has allowed for distribution for one to essentially advertise their craft and become known relatively easily and quicker than ever before. One area of creativity, film making, will be discussed in terms of the challenges facing practitioners vs amateurs in producing digital content. The existence of distribution via websites such as YouTube, fan films.net and others alike allows for anybody to upload anything. We watch some bad quality video on YouTube and just put up with it, so where does this leave professional filmmakers who make good quality films?

While as it may seem that anyone can produce digital content and put in on the web in public domains such as YouTube, not all the the content produced is high quality. While bad quality films on YouTube are still watched, the amateurs making them poorly are less likely to get a job in the industry. Professionals are good with lighting, sound and other technical applications, while amateurs are still in the experimental stage. Professionals have had more time to develop and refine their craft [8]. and have the upper hand in this industry as they are known for their talents and various roles can often be filled on the basis of who knows you and the skills you have. Since the industry is very much like this, it becomes challenging for amateurs wishing to pursue careers in film as they will find it hard to get paid jobs without any prior 'work experience' so to speak.
Amateurs are faced with financial limitations and particularly challenged by the difficulty to find/use trained actors. The advantage professionals have over amateurs is they can afford star actors which contributes to the overall success of a film particularly in the mainstream market. When we talk about films, we ask who stars in it, audiences want to see films with star actors [7]. In the history of film, dating back to the origins of film making, film makers gradually began to use the same actors to stimulate audiences so that they were more enticed to come and see these films, because they were seeing someone well-known [10]. The technology of today with the ease of digitisation has decreased labour time in editing, and not only that, the emergence of HD Camcorders has accelerated learning processes making it easier for just about anybody to produce content of a fair standard.

Amateur film makers have access to YouTube as a viable education essentially helping them learn the tools of the production. A quick search on YouTube of video-based tutorials, some made by film students and some made by professionals themselves, reveals . One film for each category; shot types, framing and composition and lighting and cinematography [4] [5] [6]. These were located on the first page of each of the searches conducted. Just by watching, anybody can copy the things shown in these tutorials, however, limitations the amateur's are faced with is accessibility to resources.
While you can essentially get an education over the Internet especially through YouTube -as it is becoming the new 'TV', actually getting started on the practical application requires time. Its not as easy as it looks, and practitioners have spent the time learning from their mistakes to refine their craft [8].

A challenge amateur film makers are faced with is access to resources. Professionals are more likely to be able to afford equipment and star actors [8] [7]. On the other hand, amateurs may have connections with trained actors who are willing to do work for free as the nature of the industry involves many interested in work experience to essentially become known. Amateurs can too produce quality films, so this is a challenge for professionals. The challenges amateurs are faced with finance wise are working on a low budget which proves to the the biggest challenge in the sense of time [3]. Also, acquiring funding bodies, as is dependable on how viable the project is. A lot of work is required in order to prove viability including the business involved. It is very extensive in the sense that media law comes into play as well as accounting. University degrees are required and of course experience in the industry.

The concept of media convergence provides amateur film makers with a forum to have their films shown to a wider audience beyond family and friends, because of the emergence of the world wide web [1]. Amateurs can get their name out there through popularity. Fan films is a niche market which works, the popularity of these film exists. Having watched a couple, some are poor quality in terms of lighting and sound, but there are however high quality productions that exist [1]. Stars wars is a great example that exists in the fan film forum. With over 300 videos made, it certainly sits up there in popularity.

While
digital media has put the tools of production into the hands of the everyday computer user making it incredibly easy to produce content, there is still the issue of quality. All elements come together to create the success of a film. Professional film makers have more resources at their expense, and amateurs are limited to whatever they can find. The emergence of digitalised cameras and editing has made film making even easier, but the main challenge amateur film makers face is financing. Acquisition of funding bodies takes time and commitment and the ones who are willing to and are serious about film making are the ones who belong to the industry. Competition exists within every sector of the world and the fact that professionals are being challenged by their amateur competition, says something about amateur film makers. Amateurs are also working towards a benchmark that has been set quite high. What it all comes down to at the end of the day is Who will watch the film? and Will they like it? The only thing professional film makers need to worry about is what content they are producing and is it reaching a wide audience. The Hollywood style takes simple messages that can be told in 5 minutes and turn them into 90 minute features [2]. As long as narrative remains this way, professional film makers will continue to produce quality content.

Week 8 - Politics and the Internet

How many of the following can you achieve while sticking to your political beliefs?

• Sign an e-petition:
I Signed a petition of the Griffith University Innocence Program, to allow for the DNA evidence to be retained in the matter of a man currently serving life imprisonment for a crime which he may not have committed.
http://www.griffith.edu.au/law/innocence-project/e-petition/request-for-access

• Respond to a professional blogger at a major news site.

• What is Barak Obama up to today?

• Find out who your local, state and federal representatives are.
Local: Mayor Ron Clarke for Gold Coast City Council
Information was found by a google search from http://www.councillors.info/
In term of where I live, the Local Representative is Body Corporate Sanctuary Cove.
Body corporate control everything from mail-outs to who gets to cut your grass. The Sanctuary Cove Resort Act 1985 is a document of government legislation which regulates the provisions of Sanctuary Cove. The act includes that the Executive committee's decisions are to be decisions of primary thoroughfare body corporate.

Local, State and Federal Representation
State:
Broadwater - ALP
Croft Peta-Kaye, (Peta-Kaye) BA [Ms]
Parliamentary Secretary for Emergency Services

Surfers Paradise - LNP
Langbroek John-Paul, Honore (John-Paul) BDentalSc(Hons) [Mr]

• Look up the Queensland or Australian hansard to find the last time your local member spoke in parliament. After many searches, I came across the Record of Prceedings for Thursday 8th October, 2009. It seemed to be the most current Hansard document for the First session of the fifty third Parliament. Main Speaker was AM Bligh about various topics, to name a few; Pacific Warning Tsunami Centre, Carrara Stadium, Celebrity Master Chef, The Tragedy of the Montevideo Maru...

Mr Langbroek spoke in Regards to blue collar workers and Queensland Rail.

• Let your local member know what you think about their last speech.
It was hardly a speech - he just adressed a few issues about cattle and fair trading to AM Bligh and that is all.

• Read the lecture and the readings, pursue a couple of the topics that you find most interesting and then post your blog with your well-considered thoughts about the theory and practice of politics.
The Podcast with Allan Carrington, talking the Prof. Steve Stockwell- Hacking for Global Democracy
Notes i took from the Podcast:
Steve defined the Hacker as someone who (via early chronicles) intervenes in information flow and also in regards to people who toy with networks and computers to understand how they work. The question was asked by Allan whether this is seen as a negative thing? While number of hackers engage in self benefiting activities such as getting information off credit cards etc. the positive thing about hacking is students getting most uses out of the internet. In terms of information sharing, Steve believes that Information demands to be free. Allan intervened questoning should it? Steve responded on a spiritual level it should be. Copyright was then brought up. Has been around for a few hundred years- great that it has given authors a certain level of income support.
Boundaries of the internet as an issue-people need to be taught what is going to get them into trouble when hacking.
How to teach the next generation of leaders to manage information - university putting info in large databases.. and the existence of open source.
The idea that we need access...
Today's digital world impacting knowledge building - today's technology is giving us analytical tools to manage information - certainly more visual.
http://createworld2008.edublogs.org/2008/12/24/hacking-for-global-democracy/

My Ideas/ Thoughts/ Opinion:
Information is important to knowledge building. The idea of Steve's that information should be free and that we need access. My Ideas on this thought are while this is true the concept of censorship may become important because with every good comes a bad and there will be people out their using information in a negative way. To me it seems like too big of an operation, and hackers will always find a way around the system. With the sphere of information having become so much wider with the emergence of new communication technologies, at the same time there is debate that the future generation is dumbing down. If I broke down where I spend my time surfing the internet into percentages, this is the result (approximately):
Social Networking (Facebook) 30%
Checking Emails 10%
Youtube 45%
University Related 10%
Miscellaneous 5%
I think i limit myself in terms of learning. I rarely use any other search engine but google and Facebook and Youtube being where i spend most of my time is not allowing me really to explore the world of cyberspace. However the idea that Steve mentioned that learning is much more visible, Youtube has a variety of educational video available. I have benefited from watching video tutorials about film making including how to light properly and frame shots.
In regards to Steve's comment that we are hackers, I never thought of myself as a hacker because I've always thought of the term as a negative thing.

+ we ask:

What do you think of the Australian Government's plans to censor the internet (the so-called "Clean Feed")???
My biggest concern is will it even work - and i mean is it possible to censor the world wide web because it is so big! After reading a little bit more about this concept from the following site: http://nocleanfeed.com/learn.html i have learn't that the clean feed is for the protection of children and that the feed will be mandatory in every home. The question was raised what about homes with no children? This is a very plausible argument. The issues about what age will the internet be censored at !5, 10, 5 years? This is another issue for homes without children. The concept is a bit far fetched in my opinion. What ever happened to parental locking? Couldnt there be a better way to censor for children without intervening the internet freedom of adults

What place does censorship have in a democracy?
I don't think it has a place at all, because what is comes down to is who decides...? I don't think that another should decide for another which sites that visit on the internet, because simplistically thinking, that would be like somebody saying to me that i can't use facebook because they think its limiting me, while it does limit me, I believe it is about choice and i should make the choice about whether to use it or not regardless.

Week 9 - Internet Art

I really liked the apple (mac) girl with black and white everything but colorful hair, so i decided to get working with Photo Shop to create my own master piece...

Took me a while but the results were what i wanted to see!
This is similar to the original thing I saw a while ago, but I can't find it so just to give and Idea of what i was trying to achieve...but minus the yellow background and with colourful hair!
http://www.ipodknowledge.com/images/yellow-girl.gif

Week 7 - Freeware Apps

I downloaded Gimp - the alternative to photoshop. I couldn't even get an image to work on because Gimp uses file format XCF and i couldn't work out a way to change the file format on my computer. I tried opening an image in Photoshop and save it as an XCF, but there was no option to do so, instead i changed it to DICOM format and then tried to open it in Gimp, but it wouldn't work! I don't have alot of patience when it comes to these things!

I will try again later!

Ok now we are happenning - i opened the photo in Preview and changed it to GIF format, then in Gimp I changed the preference to GIF and it worked! I thought it would and thank fully it did, otherwise I would not know what on earth to do next.

After having a bit of play with the program - clicking on the button, trying new things and not really getting what I would like to see, I am frustrated by this software!

After browsing around for other free software, i was interested in the following:
Irfan View - for photo manipulation

Week 4 - Find three internet delivered short films

3 Internet delivered short films

1. This film was taken from fanfilms.net website - It was made a fan film for Grand Theft Auto, and has over a thousand views on youtube. Fan Films is a popular site for audiences who want to see more of their favourite films. The most fan films made on this site is for starwars. We watched one of these in our lecture, and while i personally didn't like it, because I'm not a star wars fan, I enjoyed others including the one i chose to put on my blog.

2. This film comes from Tropfest, the World's largest short film festival. Tropfest runs a competition once a year for up and coming film makers. The competition has a theme and contestants are asked to produce a film no longer than 7 minutes. Tropfest provides a platformfor film makers to gain international exposure. Finalists films can be accessed via youtube.

What i loke about this film is it the subliminal meaning - it could also be used for commercial purposes like say for example an add for Bonds underwear and the slogan could be something like 'receive more than just the comfort of Bonds underwear...'

3. This film is from the BMW series featuring Clive Owen.

We were shown this particular film in our lecture. I enjoyed it! I didn't actually realise it was a film to promote BMW cars. It took me a little bit for it to connect and then it was this realisation of ohhhhhhhhh ohhhhh I get it now! Blonde moment for me...I like this film because it was directed by Guy Ritchie and i like his style. His films Snatch, Rock N Rolla and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrells all have this particular editing style and It's something that inspires me when thinking about creating films.

Week 6 - ireport

Jeremy Hutton, Nills Nilsson and I worked together on our ireport news piece. We came up with the concept Teachers On Strike, due to students using mobile phones in class. We thought it was relevant to the course and we took something that was current and put a twist on it as, the day we filmed, was the same day there was a strike. With the help of Josh Nicholas, we were able to produce a believable fictitious news piece.

Week 4 Blog

1. What is the weight of the world's biggest pumpkin? How long did it take to grow?
1689 lbs. It took four years according to my initial research, but after further research, the biggest pumpkin is actually 1800 lbs. And it took

2. What is the best way (quickest, most reliable) to contact Lilly Allen?
They say that we are all connected by 7 degrees, and the movie "My Date with Drew" shows how an ordinary guy gets a date with drew Barrymore, this took a while though, so the answer to this question would have to be IMBD. COM

3. What is the length of a giraffe's tongue?
Well, its more like an average length, of 18 - 20 inches.

4. How would you define the word 'glycomics'? In your own words, what does it really mean ? What does the term 'seagull manager' refer to?

Novelty medicines produced through the study of Glycans - carbohydrate cells within the body.

The short of the definition as the Encarta World English Dictionary states, a seagull manager is one who is highly critical in the workforce, arriving and leaving with no compassion!

5. What was David Cronenberg's first feature film? Which of his films Had 'Blondie' in it?
At first glance, my Sources state that his first feature film was called "Fly", released on January 8, 1987. I got this information from Imdb. My Further Research states that his first feature film was actually called STEREO, 1969, which he wrote and directed.

6. When was the original 'Hacker's Manifesto' written?
1986

7. Why do phone numbers in Hollywood films start with '555'?

The number 5 on the keypad, corresponding to the letters JKL did not make any English words.

8. What is the cheapest form of travel from the Gold Coast to Sydney?
First place checked was Jet Star at $69, (carry on luggage only), $79 (check-in luggage)
Distance to Sydney (Road) 927km. Considering that fuel costs about $1.30/L and on avg ...litres are consumed per km.. it wouls cost....
9. What song was top of the Australian Pop Charts this week in 1965?

10. Which Brisbane band includes Stephen Stockwell on keyboards and vocals?

Week Three

WIDE SHOT (WS) Also known as an Establishing shot, used to set the scene, i.e. give an indication of where the action is about to take place. Example:
http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3405482240/tt1046173

MID SHOT (MS)
Usually just the head and upper torso. A generic shot used in an interview situation. Has particular emphasis on a person, object or thing. Examples:
Interview

EXTREME CLOSE UP (ECU)
Places focus on an object, person or thing. Example just someone's eyes on screen, opening a door with just the focus on the hand to the door knob/handle.
This sort of shot is usually followed or lead with a MID SHOT and before that usually an ESTABLISHING SHOT. So there is a Where? answered with a WS, What answered with a MS and who answered with a ECU. This is not for all cases but gives some indication of why these shots are used.
Example:

Of Course I could have totally misinterpreted this task and ECU might really be the European consumers union.. and MS stands for METRO STATION and most likely, WS is probably an acronym for Weird Silence...

Convergence - My definition: the simplification of technology into one device. For Convenience, speed and efficiency!

Week Two Convergence Technologies

What will they come up with next? You name it, they make it..

We are living in the age of convergent technologies, where a 'microwave oven' convergent technology is something considered of the past, what I'm trying to say is that it's not cool, because its not a robotic fish or a USB microwave or a smart phone. Technology is a continual advancement, 2 years ago I thought battery powered cars would come around in about 10 years, today Hybrid cars are being manufactured. When i say what will they come up with next, you name it, they'll make it, I'll be there are already Robot chefs in some restaurant somewhere in the world!

How amazing is this navigation Technology!

Week One New. Com. Tech.

This is the second blog I've had to use while at university as part of an assessed task. I must say, these blogs are much better than writing essays, so I'm all for it!

This semester I hope be intrigued, and learn NEW things about the wide world of technology. inewidea.com is a fascinating website with crazy technological inventions!

It's pretty much like you think of it, they've already made it!
